I was born to be a chef,” says Alexandre Gauthier, who immersed himself in the world of classic French cuisine from an early age. The Frenchman trained at the Hotel Management School in Le Touquet and worked with renowned chefs such as Grégory Coutanceau, Régis Marcon and Michel Roth before taking over the family restaurant La Genouillère in La Madelaine-sous-Montreuil in 2003. Even then, his cooking style was characterised by a vision of reflecting the flavours and natural diversity of his homeland in every dish, and the ambitious young chef gave the traditional restaurant a new, modern look. His passion and talent did not go unnoticed: Alexandre Gauthier was awarded his first Michelin star in 2008. And since being named Chef of the Year by Gault&Millau in 2016 and receiving his second Michelin star in 2017, he has been a major influence on contemporary French cuisine. Alexandre Gauthier remains true to his philosophy, focusing on authenticity and creativity. “Radically regional” is his motto, and he prefers to use ingredients from the rivers and forests around his restaurant. The interior of La Genouillère is also very special: in 2011, architect Patrick Bouchain added two modern, linear metal tents to the 100-year-old building, where guests can dine overlooking the garden. Alexandre Gauthier’s other culinary projects include Froggy’s Tavern, which opened in 2007, Anecdote, inspired by his father’s cuisine, in 2015, the pieuX guesthouse in 2019, and Sur Mer, a restaurant on the beach at Merlimont-Plage, which he opened in 2023.
